There’s £500bn of our money on the line and we still don’t know if it will save us from economic destruction. In the coming months, you can expect accountants to come in for a lot of flak, and some of it will be well-deserved. An odd time to celebrate the profession? Well, there may be trouble ahead, but while there’s music and all that. Anyway, you never audited a bank, did you?Steve Pipe celebrated the tenth birthday of AVN this week with the mixture of happiness and caution you would expect, given the financial climate. Yet where there is volatility there is opportunity, and the party also marked the launch of a new recession-busting service for owner-managed businesses. If you have a few of those on your books you might be interested to know that Steve is offering a complimentary one-day training course to the first 100 accountants who sign up. Interested?
Another person celebrating the accountant this Friday is Tony Margaritelli, chairman of the Institute of Certified Practising Accountants. You might not agree with his definition of what an accountant is, of course. The six accounting bodies of the CCAB, lead by the ICAEW, are slowly banding together to lobby that only their members have the right to call themselves accountants. Tony disagrees, and is campaigning for greater inclusion if the title is legally protected. Given that statistics suggest up to 60% of accountants in practice aren’t CCAB qualified, there might be a bit of a dust-up here. What side of the fence are you on?
Continuing in a celebratory vein, another thing accountants can take pride in is their tact and politeness. Don’t believe me? Check out the closing round of our latest Great Debate. While most online arguments instantly descend into anonymous mud-slinging (or worse), the AccountingWEB.co.uk community has been participating in civilised digital debate all month. You wouldn’t catch solicitors doing that.
So don’t be shy. If you want to take a greater part in AccountingWEB.co.uk, and if you want to other accountants to know who you are and what you stand for, sign up for our membership directory (you will need to log in to access your profile). In a short while we hope this will provide a great networking opportunity for you all to interact with each other. And if you’re comically inclined, isn’t about time you had a go at our caption competition? New entrants are eagerly sought!
Regards to all
